Trivia About the Brain
By Haydn
Do you know what trivia means? Trivia means nonessential
or inconsequential things.
1. 10 seconds is how long it takes for someone to lose conscious once blood flow is blocked from the brain.
2. It`s a myth that alcohol destroys brain cells. But it is true that alcohol weakens connections between neurons and makes new cells grow less quickly, which interferes with brain activity and causes serious damage.
3. On average, a male brain is slightly bigger than the female brain, but the difference in size or weight does not mean there are differences in mental ability.
4. A study from 2003 found that 18 percent of people surveyed never or rarely dreamed in color, but in 1942 as many as 71 percent never or rarely did. It`s amazing the difference T.V. and movies have made!
5. Though researchers are not sure why, studies show that test groups that chew gum had an improved memory of 35 percent when compared with test groups that did not chew gum.
One theory is that insulin, a natural chemical that stimulates the part of the brain related to memory, is released when chewing.
6. The word “Shrink,” comes from the word “headshrinker,” and probably started as a denigrating comparison between psycotherapy and a tribal of practice of boiling beads. The first recording of the descriptor was in 1966.
What do you think about these brain trivia questions? There is your Trivia about the Brain!!!
John F Kennedy
By Daulten
JFK, John F. Kennedy, or Jack as he was called by many was born May 29, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts at 3:00 PM to Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald. John was the second son of the Kennedy’s. In 1927 John’s family moved to New York City, where he joined the Boy Scouts and became the first president to do so. At the end of his senior year, in his yearbook his classmates voted him “Most likely to succeed.” In September 1941 John tried to join the US Army but they would not let him because he had back problems. So John joined the US Navy. Three months later Pearl Harbor had been attacked. John was soon trained for battle. Some time after this he earned the rank of lieutenant and earned command of a patrol boat, PT 109. John’s boat along with two other patrol boats were ordered nighttime duty at New Georgia in the Solomon Islands. On August 2, 1943 John’s boat was rammed by a Japanese destroyer called Amagiri. The medals John earned were: the purple heart because he was wounded, the American Defense Service Medal because he served between the beginning of World War 2 and Pearl Harbor. He also was rewarded with the American Campaign Medal because he had fought in World War 2, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, because had had fought for the navy in the Pacific. And lastly the World War 2 Victory Medal because he had fought in World War 2. In 1944 tragedy struck the Kennedys; John’s older brother Joseph was killed in action. A few years later John began his political career in the house of representatives, in 1952 he would win a seat in the senate, the next year he would marry his wife Jacqueline, or as many called her, Jackie. They would have three children, one daughter, Caroline, two sons, John, also known as John John, and Patrick who would die days after he was born. In 1960 John F Kennedy started his campaign to run for president of the United States, he would end up winning instead of Richard M. Nixon who was the former vice president of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Many things happened during Kennedy’s term; The failed Bay of Pigs revolution which was to overthrow the dictator of Cuba, Fidel Castro. John also was president during the Cuban Missile Crisis when the United States discovered that Cuba had nuclear missiles which they could launch into the United States. On November 22, 1963 it all ended. As John F Kennedy was going through the city of Dallas, Texas, an assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald fired 3 shots and wounded John F Kennedy. Minutes later Kennedy was dead, soon after he was pronounced dead, he was put on a plane back to Washington DC. During the ride, vice president Lyndon Baines Johnson would be sworn in as the 36 president of the United States.
All About Sand Cats
By Emili
Not the pet cat, not a lovable furry friend, not a friendly type of animal. It’s the cute, but wild sand cat.
Where they live?
The sand cat can live in places that are even too hot for the desert cat like: the Sahara, the Arabian Desert, and the deserts of Iran and Pakistan.
How they survive in these hot places
The sand cat has long hairs growing between its toes. These create a cushion of fur over the foot pads, helping to insulate them while moving over hot sand. They can survive in temperatures ranging from 23 °F -126 °F, and go into borrows during extreme conditions. Another way they can survive is adaptation, which is changes in the body to fit a location.
What they eat
Sand cats eat nocturnal hunters of small mammals, birds, insects and reptiles; sand cats slink up to their prey silently, low to the ground. Their strategy is to get as close to the prey as possible without being seen or heard before striking. Their extremely sharp teeth and claws are ideal for grabbing and capturing prey.
What a sand cat looks like
(don’t be fooled by their cuteness)
- They are a pale, sandy-gray color with white bellies
- Markings include a reddish streak from the corner of the eye across the cheek, and dark striping on the legs and tail, which is tipped black
- Sand cats reach up to 36 inches long and about 10 inches height at the shoulder
- Hair covers their paw pads.
Now watch out if you ever want to go to the desert because the sand cats are watching.
