Born May 17, 1939 ,in Minnesota, into a military family, Paulsen was shy and didn’t have many friends. Reading became a passion. One evening, he entered the public library in the town where he lived. He checked out his first book. At the age of 14, he ran away from home and joined a traveling carnival. This experience gave him a sense of adventure. Paulsen attended college for a short time and worked at many different jobs. He became a full-time writer in the 1960s. Love of the outdoors and nature a themes in his books. Many of his books are set in the wilderness, where characters overcome difficult challenges. Paulsen also relies upon his own experiences of dogsledding, hunting, and trapping in his books. Today, Paulsen lives in New Mexico and continues to write for teens and adults.
