Manheim Central Middle School PTO
January 2012 Meeting Minutes
1. Michelle Stone opened the meeting and welcomed everyone to the New Year!
2. Administrative Updates:
Mrs. Hess explained about the schedule changes that took place at the beginning of February. These changes were made after some scheduling conflicts for the band/orchestra/chorus. On the first and third Wednesday of each month there will be an hour long period for these students to meet at the end of the day. This will also be for Student Council, Friends of Rachel, etc. All other students will have something similar to Baron Time at that point. She also mentioned the ongoing “Jeans for Teens” campaign that the Middle School is participating in. Students can bring in gently used jeans to be added to the district wide collection.
3. Student Council Representative:
Mrs. Barclay was present to inform us of the Student Council activities. There is a new 7th/8th grade representative and she was unable to attend the meeting. Mrs. Barclay stated that at present there are 38 fifth graders and 46 sixth graders currently representing. There are 7 different committees and each student may choose 2 committees to serve on. With the current schedule, meetings are taking place over lunch. Even with the current economic standings the magazine sale held in September was successful. The Fall Fest held in October was another huge success, as it always is, and 191 5th & 6th grade students attended. In November a bus load of food collected by our Middle School students was taken to the food bank and on Veterans Day the student council sold red, white and blue beads which raised $175.00! This money was sent to the Fisher House, which is basically a military “Ronald McDonald” type home where families of injured military personal can stay while their loved ones are in the hospital. In December the annual “Giving Tree” yielded 9 boxes of toiletry items to be dropped off at the food bank and candy canes were sold which raised an additional $105.00 for the food bank to purchase needed supplies. In January the student store opened much to the delight of students! Currently the 6th graders are training the 5th graders! On February 3rd, Family Movie/BINGO night took place and 170 people had RSVPd as of our meeting date. On Valentine’s Day the 5th & 6th graders would be selling items with profits heading toward either the Make a Wish Foundation or the Humane League. The 7th & 8th graders were planning on selling candy bars with profits heading toward the Ronald McDonald House. Overall our students are busy and we can be proud of the difference they are making in the lives of others!
4. Treasurer’s Report:
The budget was read aloud and the motion was made by Gina Burkhart to approve it, it was then seconded by Kathy Shenk.
5. Old Business:
a. PTO blog and PTO tab are both now fixed and are up and running! Get all the latest information and read meeting minutes from this tab on the Middle School website
b. The Fall Book Fair went well. Tons of free books were given to students. Our Spring Book Fair is scheduled to begin on May 16th, 2012.
c. As mentioned above the Fall Fest was a successful fun evening for our Middle School students.
d. Fundraiser for the 2011/2012 school year will be sub ticket sales. This was held on February 1st – 10th. Students were given an order form in order to sell sub tickets which could be redeemed at the S. Clyde Weaver store. Once the order form was turned in the tickets would be given to the student to distribute. We were asking each student to sell five sub tickets or if a parent wished to, a $10.00 donation could be sent in instead.
e. Many of our Middle School Students participated in our annual Clothing Drive held in the fall, either by “shopping” or donating items to the drive. It was such a huge success that we would like to hold another one in the spring and a date was set for April 30- May 4.
f. The Gaga Pit is almost complete! And in fact we are having two of them made
g. Box Tops: 11,405 box tops were collected by the December collection date! The next scheduled date is February 8th. HUGE thanks to Beth Hosler for coordinating this at the Middle School!! Her reward parties are always enjoyed by the winning students!!
6. New Business:
a. Target – “Take charge of Education”. Michelle Stone mentioned this program she had seen advertised which is basically ran like the Giant Rewards that our school takes part in. Basically it’s another easy way for our school to earn money to be used for our students. Michelle was going to get some more information and see if it would be worth looking into.
b. BINGO/ Movie Night…was held on February 3rd with the movie “Dolphin Tale” being shown.
c. Teacher / Staff Appreciation Week is coming up! This will be held the week of March 5th – 9th. Gina Burkhart has agreed to chair this event. The PTO will plan a week of fun things for our teachers / staff to let them know how much we appreciate all they do!
d. The School Store as mentioned is up and running!
e. NEW PTO OFFICERS!! There are some officers who will be stepping down next year and replacements will be needed. This is a low key way to get involved at the Middle School. Consider volunteering for the 2012 / 2013 school year.
f. One School / One Book: it was brought up that families with multiple students at the middle school do not necessarily need or want multiple copies of the book at their house after the book is finished. It was suggested to see if there is a way to donate some of the copies to another school. We will check into this and see.
g. Students WILL be having school on MARCH 5th. This is a scheduled make up day.
h. The next PTO meeting will be held on March 27th, 2012. Meeting adjourned.
