Multiplication Fun!

Posted by grimleyb on 15th November and posted in Uncategorized

We have been learning multiplication in our math group this week!

We have found some fun websites and games you can play at home on your computer!  My students love playing them, too!

Multiplication as repeated addition:

Multiplication as patterns in numbers (on a chart):

Have fun, and give them a challenge!

Need Help with Phonics?

Posted by grimleyb on 27th September and posted in Uncategorized

Starfall is a great, free online tool for helping students that have difficulty with phonics.

Starfall.com opened in September of 2002 as a free public service to teach children to read with phonics. Their systematic phonics approach, in conjunction with phonemic awareness practice, is perfect for preschool, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, special education, homeschool, and English language development (ELD, ELL, ESL). Starfall is an educational alternative to other entertainment choices for children.

Check it out!  :)

A Great Math Tip………Color Coding!

Posted by grimleyb on 20th September and posted in Uncategorized

A great math tool we use in my math group is color coding, especially in rounding!

For the math group, we are working on rounding.  The red numbers mean “stop and stay”.  The green numbers mean “up, up and away”.  Numbers 0-4 are stop and stay numbers (we round down).  Numbers 5-9 are up, up and away numbers (we round up).

For example,
if I wanted to round 47, the 7 is my helper.  The 7 is a green number, so therefore, we go up, up and away, and round that number to 50.

Color coding the numbers makes it super easy and the kids love it.

Try some color coding and rounding activities at home for extra practice!

Round these numbers.  Use the ones place as your helper number!
1. 38
2. 45
3. 13
4. 71
5. 89

Good luck!

Hello and Welcome Back!

Posted by grimleyb on 19th September and posted in Uncategorized

Hi parents and students,

I know we have been back for nearly a month, but I wanted to officially say, “Welcome Back”!  My, my, my – what a month September has been.  I hope our families in Manheim are receiving the support they need after the flooding we have received.  I personally had flooding in my basement, so we are in the process of cleaning that up right now!

School is off to a great start!  We have many great interventions and modifications set in place so that each student is successful in school!  This year, my students will be involved in SRA Corrective Reading to assist them with word decoding and fluency.  Another great intervention we will be using is Soar to Success, which will assist in grade level comprehension.  Both are great tools in making our students better readers!

In math, we have many great interventions and review tools.  Like mechanics that need tools to work on cars, teachers need tools to help children learn to their fullest potential!  We will be using tools like Mountain Math, Study Island (a website designed to remediate and accelerate),  and PALS (Peer Assisted Learning  Strategies).

Some great things you can use at home are math flash cards.  These will help students develop their basic math skills to get ready for the more multi-step math problems.  Also, utilize the websites available for students, such as Starfall for phonics development, First in Math for basic skills practice, and Cool Math Games for that extra “push” in math.

If you ever need to speak with me, you can either call me at the school or email me at grimleyb@manheimcentral.org.

Thanks and here’s to a great school year!
