Math Picnic!

Filed under: Math — giannottia at 12:04 pm on Tuesday, May 8, 2012

On Friday, Hands on House visited Stiegel.  The children were at a ‘math picnic!’  They were able to ‘play’ with manipulatives that resembled food that you would take on a picnic!  There were also other manipulatives that resembled activities that you would play if  you were at a park on a picnic!

The children did addition problems with hamburger and hot dogs.  They had to match the hamburger or hot dog (addition problem) with the correct bun (answer to the addition problem).  Hunter and Riley are reading their addition problem on the hamburger and matching it to the correct bun.

Dalton, Jaden, Rachel, Makenzie, Jeyshua,  and Jesse went ‘fishing.’  They had to catch a fish that was greater than 10 inches.  At this center the children measured the fish that they caught!  You can see Dalton measuring his fish along the bucket!

The children also had to create estimations.  They held the bears and tried to determine which bear was heavier.  The kids would put their bears on a ‘scale’ or seesaw.  The bear that was the heaviest would be closer to the ground!  Wade is doing a great job at this math center!

There were many insects at our ‘math picnic!’  The children caught some of the insects in their containers.  They would categorize the insects.  Andrew is catching all insects with red eyes and Dalton is catching insects that have wings!

The children completed subtraction problems, made volume estimations, explored fractions and much more!  This was a great experience!

This week we learned about how vegetables come from different parts of the plant!  We inspected and observed roots, stems, leaves, and flowers that we eat!  Here are a few pictures of the children observing the characteristics of broccoli and cauliflower with magnifying lenses!

Last week we learned about Roy G Biv and how it can help us remember the colors of the rainbow!  We used the primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) to make all of the colors of the rainbow.  We had to mix some colors to make other colors!

Lancaster County Park

We visited the Lancaster County Park on March 1st.  We were able to hold and closely look at animal skulls found in Pennsylvania.  We were able to hold a bear and a deer skull.  We held a goose skull as well.  We looked at snake skill and a complete skeleton of a bat.  Later, we learned how sap is collected and then made into syrup.   Here is a link to a video of the children trying fresh sap from a tree!

Sanding Wood

We sanded wood to change the shape of basswood.  We used sandpaper.  It was amazing for the students to see the wood transform into a different shape.  For some, this was their first experience with sandpaper.  They had fun!  There is a link for a video.
