The school year is coming to an end and we have had a wonderful year.  We have welcomed four new members to our ESL family, three at the MS and one at the HS. Two young ladies joined us from Puerto Rico, one young lady came  from the Ukraine and a young man  from Myanmar transferred in from Harrisburg.  Our class  time has been spent on topics ranging from  acquiring  the basics of English to reading one of  the world’s greatest tragedies, Macbeth.  We took the WIDA Access test in February and look forward to the results arriving in early summer.

All the students are encouraged  to read and read some more this summer. They  have been given Manheim Library Card registration forms for every member of their families, as well as directions to the library.  Please have a lovely summer and come back to school rested and ready to continue learning.  :)

We have just completed a successful year in ESL.  Three Seniors are collegebound with two heading to Penn State and  one going to Lehigh Carbon Community College. Some of the younger students are going to Mexico, Puerto Rico, Netherlands, Canada and Disney World!  All the students were offered books from my bookshelves to read over the summer.  Please help me in encouraging the kids to read and read some more:).  Happy Summer to everyone!  Mrs. Fry:)

ESL at the MS covers grades 5-8. My students are increasing their language skills in so many ways. I serve as their language acquisition teacher as well as their content support supporter:). This allows me to see the amazing GO’s, wonderful projects and creative lessons with which the teachers in our school are challenging our students. My ESL students are wonderful to teach and I am always amazed by how quickly they are learning not only the language but the culture.

Our ESL class is venturing into unknown territory. We are studying Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. As a class, we are learning much about the Elizabethan Period, the language of Shakespeare and the literary elements present in drama. Since R&J has gone so well, we are moving onto A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I will keep you posted as we continue our dramatic journey.

Currently all my MS Ell’s are working on improving reading and writing skills.  We are targeting reading strategies, building vocabulary and writing summaries.  Students bring classwork to ESL and teachers will send tests and reading materials  so that I can help make the assignments  comprehensible in a small group setting.
