Force and Motion!

Published by under Newsletters,Videos

We are well underway in our last unit of science for Team A.  So far we’ve discussed mostly motion and have talked about speed, velocity, and acceleration.  Here’s a good way to remember the difference between those three terms:

We are moving on to the force section of the unit and have started off with a great tug of war competition to learn about balanced and unbalanced forces.

How are you doing with your goals?

Published by under Newsletters

As we entered the third marking period (which ends at the end of next week!), each person created two goals.  Most of them dealt with academics like getting all A’s and B’s for the 3rd and 4th marking period or improving in a specific subject or getting all homework done on time.  Some goals were social in nature like sit with different people in the cafeteria or make new friends.  I encouraged students to write their two goals down on an index card and put it in their locker where they see it every day.

I also wrote some goals down for myself.  As you may know, I enjoy running.  One of my goals was to improve on my half marathon time so I set a goal of running one in 1 hour 48 minutes.  This weekend, I had the opportunity to meet that goal.  I ended up with a 1:45:35 which beat my old personal record by over 3 minutes.

Here’s the things with goals though–you can’t just say you have a goal–you have to work towards it.  I could say that I wanted to run a half marathon in 1:48 but if I didn’t do the weeks of training with tempo runs, mile repeats, and long distance runs, there’s no way I would’ve been able to meet my goal.  It’s the same way with academic goals as well.  You can’t just say you want to get all A’s.  You have to do your homework, make sure you’re meeting the requirements on projects, and study for quizzes and tests.

Goals are not talk–they involve a lot of action.  As this marking period ends and the last one begins, I encourage you to take action and go through the steps needed to achieve your goals.  You’ll be happy you did.  My legs might be sore, but I couldn’t be more pleased.

Things in our solar system

Published by under Newsletters

This week we’ve been seeing/hearing some excellent presentations on the planets (and dwarf planets) in our solar system.  Students made a powerpoint presentation.  They are saved on googledocs so if you would like to see it, just ask your son/daughter to log in and show you.  We also have been comparing planet sizes and distances so the entire solar system fits in our hallway!  We ended the week talking about rocks flying through space–aka asteroids, meteoroids, meteors, meteorites, and comets.

The questions and conversations about our universe have been great.  Keep it up!
