06 SepHappy Back To School

Are you wondering where the summer went? This summer I was able to get away to Maine. We participated in a bus tour and had a grand time learning about about the light houses of Maine and all of the history behind such a beautiful state. This year because I was so inspired as to why the light houses were built and by whom, I thought that my theme for the 2011-2012 school be, “Be a Beacon”! When I looked the up the word beacon, it made more sense to me because it means to be a guide, to inspire or be an inspiration. Sounds great doesn’t it? I loaded up my showcase with objects of light houses, and things that are important to life around a light house. Coming out of the light house is a beacon!  It is amazing where creative ideas come from. Do you know that there are 65 light houses in Maine? Only 62 are still working and I saw at least 20 along the many shorelines. This year I am expecting all of you to be beacons; inspiring all around you.

During our first week of school the 5th and 6th graders learned what it takes to draw everything. They learned about ten new words and their definitions. Good Job!

Until next week, stay safe and be an inspiration!

14 JunSummer Is Art

Here it is June 14, and the end of school for another year.  Please look at all of the wonderful colors of summer as you vacation. Let the fresh air fill your mind and the warm summer breezes tickle your toes.  Enjoy your time off and come back refreshed and ready to learn.

I have saved all remaining 5th and 6th grade art from 2011 school year and have it in my art room.  Please feel free to stop in and pick it up.  Most of you have picked yours up but several have not.

Have a great summer!

03 JunHello world!

Hello World! I would like to take a moment and introduce myself to you.  Since 2007 I have had been honored to be the 5th and 6th grade Art Teacher at the new Middle School.  I enjoy teaching art to my students.  They are really talented and fun to work with.  In May of 2004 I received my highest certificate in the arts and that is my Master of Fine Arts Degree in Graphic Design and Illustrations. This summer I will working on six wall murals and 2 ceiling murals for two different doctor’s offices.  I enjoy painting the huge murals for children/adults because of the large canvases that you normally do not get to work with as an artist. My love for art began at a very early age and came from the unique coloring pages I enjoyed coloring as a young child.  The bold black lines up against the colorful areas that I colored delighted me.  Today my favorite medium to work with is computers. What a switch, for the computer was not around during my “growing-up” years.  I enjoy drawing and painting and then scanning my own art work into the computer and making it more interesting with a variety of computer art techniques.

My love for the outdoors comes naturally for me.  Looking at the beauty in nature often inspires my creativity and allows me to realize that my own art work isn’t or doesn’t need to be perfect.  It is the imperfections that make my world seem more beautiful.

I am a cancer survival for 3 years now and at the time of diagnosis kept a daily journal of my journey through writting and drawings. It is wonderful looking back over those years and realizing how lucky I am to be given a second chance at achieving my very best so that I can be a positive role model for my students.

When it comes to art, I have a tendency to use a statement by Edgar Degas for he believed “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”
