After studying feudalism and the Catholic Church for the last week or so, today we watched the first half of the movie, Ivanhoe. This film displays many elements of Medieval life that we have been discussing in detail. It is an opportunity to see, in action, what we have been learning about.

Today, we discussed the events that occurred between Europe’s Christians and the Muslims of the Middle East that sparked a deadly, destructive series of events commonly known as “the Crusades”. Next we completed a comprehensive review sheet about the role of the Roman Catholic Church during feudal times as a “warm-up” for today’s quiz on Feudalism and The Church. After the quiz, students read a plot summary of the story of “Ivanhoe”, and a detailed description of the major characters in the story.
Homework: Read over both sides of the Ivanhoe sheet and gain an understanding of the major characters.

Today, we checked last night’s homework for completion. We discussed the Church vocabulary words after a brief review of Feudalism. Class concluded with a powerpoint story that told the story of the Roman Catholic Church and its institutions during Feudal times in Europe.
Homework: Be prepared for a quiz tomorrow on Feudalism and the Church.

Today, we took a fresh look at European Feudalism of the Middle Ages. We discussed its origins and how this unique political/social system worked. We looked next at the role of the Roman Catholic Church in feudal affairs and worked at defining terms pertinent to the study of the church
Homework: Define all Chapter 25 vocabulary terms for tomorrow.

Today, we reviewed all of the vocabulary words for the Irish, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. Next we reviewed the “story” of the Irish, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. Next we discussed how to successfully complete the Using Vocabulary sheet for Chapter 24, Feudalism. After that, students completed the Chapter 18, 19, 20 QUIZ and then worked on the Using Vocabulary sheet.
Homework: Complete the Using Vocabulary sheet.

Today, we discussed how the Anglo-Saxons of England were converted to Christianity by Augustine and how the Celts of Ireland were converted by Saint Patrick. Next, we turned our attention to the first great threat to these island peoples, the Vikings. We discussed the Vikings while defining vocabulary terms that identify who and what the Vikings were, and why they were a great threat to other people of Europe.

Today, we checked last night’s homework for completion and then discussed the Franks storysheet. We completed a review sheet about the 5 Frankish rulers and then saw a video clip about the Dark Age and a clip about the great Frankish victory at the Battle of Tours.

Today is day 1 of 22 1/2 days for the fourth marking period. The majority of class was spent revisiting everything we have studied thus far this year and introducing the students to what is to come this marking period. After that, we introduced ourselves to the Franks and began working on a storysheet about them.

Today’s class began with checking last night’s homework for completion. We discussed the story told on “Europe Seeks, Columbus Sails” and then read and answered questions on two more sheets that discussed Columbus’ role in the Age of Discovery and the interest that other explorers demonstrated after Columbus’ success.
Homework: Textbooks collected tomorrow. Notebooks graded and marking period 4 exam is tomorrow.
